SURVIVING SIXTH GRADE

The New Kid: Surviving Middle School Is Tough

Written by Maureen Straka

Alex is dismayed that his best friend, Luke, is moving. The summer becomes a boring nightmare. When Alex wakes up late for the first day of school, he is certain it is an evil omen.

This book contains well-defined characters that will appeal to the middle-grade reader. So many familiar struggles. There are bullying, school and family relationship struggles, trust, and acceptance issues.

This book is a quick read, under one hundred pages, and a good choice for reluctant readers. I would recommend it for the eight through twelve age group.

HEARTWARMING AND FUN

Once “a pun” a Time: A guide for reading and telling jokes

Written by Wolf Cub Chloe

The personality of the author shines through every page of this book. Chloe wants to make people smile, and she certainly succeeds. Chloe began writing her books at the age of six when the pandemic started.

These simple jokes with adorable illustrations written by a child will put a smile on the face of readers. The best part is that Chloe wants her readers to continue her mission of spreading cheer. In the second part of the book, she teaches how to set up simple funny jokes by using homophones and by telling a story around a keyword.

A perfect choice for elementary school readers who want to put smiles on the faces of those they love and improve their community one person at a time.

A DIFFERENT SLANT ON THINGS

Ham Hands: The Christmas Elf

Written by Whitney Beatty

Illustrated by Becca Kaiser

Ham Hands the Christmas Elf by [Whitney Beatty, Becca Kaiser]

A funny book that preschoolers and primary grade readers will enjoy.

Ham Hands is an elf on Santa’s staff who has extremely large hands. As a result, he is banned from wrapping presents because he makes a mess of wrapping them. He is relegated to the candy room, bending the candy canes.

One Christmas Eve, Santa leaves a few presents behind. Ham Hands knows a deserving little girl is waiting. What can he do?

The text is a bit choppy in spots and the illustrations stylized, but the message is spot on. We are all unique and special. This book is also a godsend for parents who are all thumbs at wrapping Christmas gifts.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK

Avalina Jones and the Eye of the Storm

Written by Lori Adams

Avalina has lived in an orphanage from the age of four. Soon after her tenth birthday, Avalina develops strange powers like breathing underwater. A mysterious, beautiful woman appears to her in a swirling waterspout and turns her life upside down.

This creature swoops her up in a magical dinghy to a phantom pirate ship. Avalina learns that she is the last surviving heir of Davy Jones. This ship is a school for pirate heirs divided into four houses that compete to decipher a pirate map and retrieve its treasure.

Avalina must prove that she is not guilty of an awful crime. There are thrills, adventures, secrets, and legends along the way. Through it all, Avalina is not afraid to stand up for rights, fight the bullies, and work hard. Middle-grade readers will love the wonderfully descriptive language of Sea Magic, ghost pirates, fantasy sea creatures, and strange places. Highly recommended for adventure seekers and fantasy lovers, especially those in the eight to twelve age range.

An enjoyable historical fiction read based on real characters. A well-researched tale that follows several families during World War II and the Spanish flu pandemic.

The characters are believable and well-developed. Readers are drawn into the tragedies, the struggles, and at times, a bit of humor despite the awful circumstances. Each of the separate stories hits the mark and makes a deep impression on the reader.

If you enjoy historical fiction, adventure, and in-depth characters, you will like this tale.
