1          BE A ROLE MODEL AND LET YOUR CHILD SEE YOU READING FOR PLEASURE.

2          TAKE TURNS READING OUT LOUD – CHOOSE BOOKS BELOW CLASSROOM LEVEL TO BUILD CONFIDENCE.

3          LET YOUR CHILD CHOOSE BOOKS THAT INTEREST HER. IF YOU NEED HELP, ASK A TEACHER OR LIBRARIAN.

4          SHOW HOW READING IS NEEDED EVERYWHERE – DEMONSTRATE IN COMMUNITY WITH ROAD SIGNS, STORE NAMES AND ADS.

5          SKIM THE STORY SO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND ASK CHILD TO MAKE PREDICTIONS ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

6          ASK WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY QUESTIONS TO CHECK FOR COMPREHENSION.

7          USE AIDS LIKE POST ITS TO IDENTIFY KEY IDEAS – DON’T USE HIGHLIGHTERS OR PENS UNLESS YOU OWN THE BOOK.

8          IF YOU WANT TO CHALLENGE YOUR CHILD, CHECK OUT BOOKS ON TAPE IN THE LIBRARY. HERE YOU CAN CHOOSE A MORE DIFFICULT BOOK THAT THE CHILD CAN READ ALONG WITH AND NOT FEEL FRUSTRATED.
