MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK

Danny sabe leer: Danny can read (Spanish Edition) 

Written by Diana Paolo Navarro Gomez

Illustrated by Carmen Blanco

This bilingual book contains text in Spanish and English on each illustrated page. The characters are a dinosaur family consisting of siblings Lily and Danny, their parents, and a pet parrot named Poli. Lily and Danny are close. They enjoy singing, dancing, and picnicking together. One day, Danny puts the letters of the alphabet together and discovers words. He puts the words together and learns how to read.

Suddenly, his relationship with Lily changes. She becomes jealous of Danny because he spends all his time reading stories about adventures. While Lily knows her alphabet, she cannot read. Can their former close relationship be restored?

Lily possesses a talent that Danny will discover he cannot do without. The dinosaur siblings learn that differences make them stronger when they work together. This book teaches young readers that courage, kindness, and resilience lead to successful accomplishments.

The book is a wonderful resource for bilingual families and classroom teachers.

The Day I Had A Dinosaur

A fun picture book to delight young dinosaur fans.

Luke is playing in his backyard when dinosaurs suddenly appear. He and his friends spend the day playing with several different types of dinosaurs giving young readers a lesson about them. The children go to the playground, play catch, play hide and seek, and share dinner with their new friends.

The children encounter some difficulties playing with their unique new friends. They must learn teamwork and cooperation to accommodate their dinosaur friends’ needs. The book teaches these lessons as well as empathy and the value of friendship.

Preschoolers may find the book a bit difficult but the illustrations fill in the gaps. Probably better suited to kindergarten and primary grades.

Pip’s First Flight and the Power of Visualization: A dinosaur children’s story to teach kids positive thinking

Written and Illustrated by Elyse and Garrett Fox

Pip’s mom comes to the rescue by encouraging Pip to visualize all the wonderful scenarios that could happen when he experiences his first flight. Suddenly, the world opens up and he now can’t wait to venture out into the world.

This book teaches preschool and primary grade readers how to visualize and includes activities and action steps to follow up. The story and activities encourage children to use their imaginations to create positive thoughts and teaches self-confidence.

Recommended for children ages three through eight. It is a good tale to introduce an upcoming new activity or experience for a young child.

Iggy and Oz: The Plastic Dinos of Doom

Written by J.J. Johnson

This is the first book in a middle-grade adventure featuring two brothers named Iggy and Oz. Strange names because the boys consider their parents unusual. Iggy is twelve; his younger brother Oz was adopted from China. The boys compete against each other and exhibit the usual sibling rivalry.

Iggy loves to write and has an active imagination so his parents tend not to believe him. Oz wakes him up in the middle of the night to investigate monsters in the attic. When the boys finally get to the attic, they find some old plastic dinosaur toys have come to life, but the adventure begins when the dinos escape into their suburban neighborhood. There is a lot of humor, boyish banter, and a caste of interesting characters including bullies. Iggy, Oz, and their friends must save the neighborhood from destruction before it’s too late.

The plot is absurd, but perfectly believeable for the target middle-grade audience. Recommended for readers ages eight through twelve, particularly boys.

Shh! We Got a Dinosaur

A picture book that is a feast for young eyes. The pictures come in brilliant colors that seem to pop off the page.

A brother and sister come across a Tyrannosaurus Rex on the way home from school. Quickly deciding that he is hungry, the female sibling names him Henry and offers him a sandwich. When she decides to bring Henry home to her kitchen, the mischief escalates.

This book is part of a series of fanciful adventures for young children. Rhymes are crisp and sharp. While the vocabulary is challenging, it serves to enrich a young child’s language skills. Recommended especially for children with active imaginations in the three to six-year-old range.

T-Rex Twins: Brothers with Arms

Written by Michael Williamson

The T-Rex twins are adorable characters. The book describes the wonderful adventures they experience together.

They do have a big problem. The twins have exceptionally long arms that make them an object of ridicule. No one wants to befriend them until outsiders realize the value of their physical differences.

Readers learn that it is okay to be different and that each individual has value. Fun and vibrant illustrations combined with well-written text that pops off the page. This book can serve as a bedtime story or a classroom discussion book. I highly recommend it for children up to age eight.

The Dinosaur Who Discovered Hamburgers

A fanciful picture book for young readers who are obsessed with dinosaurs. The protagonist is a dinosaur who loves to eat. One day he ventures forth to discover the perfect food.

Readers follow him through deserts, mountains, forests, swamps, and rivers. After selecting what he believed to be the perfect ingredients, our dinosaur friend returns home to cook. Something seems to be missing so he visits Dr. Ham’s food technology factory to work on the missing ingredient. Will that dinosaur succeed in finding the perfect food?

Children who love silly humor and/or dinosaur tales will enjoy this picture book. Adults who read the book to children may want to remind them that many parts of the story are not factual.

My Review of the Book

Doodle Boy

For any child who loves to let his/her imagination soar. Created by an eleven-year-boy with a passion for doodling, this coloring book focuses on the thoughts and dreams of children who cannot stop moving that pencil. If you know a doodler, put this book on your must purchase list.

It reminds me of the hidden pictures pages I used to love as a child. Children are invited to discover, sports, food, alien, dinosaur, faces, computer, and environmental pictures, to name just a few. Some pages contain clearly delineated people, while others are a collage of mixed-up themes.

These could be colored with pencils, watercolors, or crayons. Younger and older siblings might enjoy working on a page together. After finishing a page, the child might enjoy creating a story to accompany his illustration. A group of children might take a few completed pages on a common theme and create a play to act out together. There are lots of creative possibilities.

Highly recommended for budding artists, children who need to express their energy in a productive way, and families looking for a family activity to share.
