My Very First Friend: A Rhyming Picture Book About a Boy and His Dog

Written by Kristina Sheldon

Illustrated by Jillian Dister

Many first-time parents already have a dog in their home when their first child arrives. This picture book features a young boy reflecting on his early experiences with the family dog. That pet became his very first friend and protector.

The simple rhymes and soft illustrations appeal to babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. It is a nice memento for dog-loving families with a young child.

Oh, the places you’ll go…

Wander World

Written and Illustrated by Katie Gigliotti

A young girl visits her grandparents but everyone at the home seems to be too busy to play with her. In desperation, she finds her grandfather dozing on the couch. She takes him by the hand and suggests that they go on a trip. Turns out grandpa has an active imagination as well.

Together, they journey to places on each of the seven continents from the frigid Antarctica to a bustling New York City. Before grandma calls them for dinner, they manage to run through the jungle, swim under the sea, build sand castles and ride on a gondola.

Soft watercolor illustrations, crisp rhymes, and imagination gone wild combine to create a pleasing narrative for beginning readers.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:

THE ANSWER LIES DEEP INSIDE YOU

My Soul Treasure (Kate’s Soul Treasure)

Written by Kate Searle

Illustrated by Alison Mutton

This rhyming picture book is a feast for the eyes and the ears. I would highly suggest reading it aloud because the crisp rhymes roll off the tongue. Each page features brilliant color images that are associated with a matching color gem. But the message is even more powerful. Young readers come to understand that each of us possesses unique qualities that lie deep within ourselves. These qualities allow us to share that uniqueness with others. Courage, compassion, creativity, confidence, imagination, and wisdom are possible examples. By teaching children to be mindful of these, the potential to develop them is enhanced.

I am confident that this book will become a favorite on the elementary reader’s bookshelf. The bonus song might just become a family favorite sing along.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:

WARM WINTER WISHES

Chipper Sends Sunshine

Written by Kimber Fox Morgan

Illustrated by Kim Sponaugle

Chipper and his friends from the arctic region decide to go south on a camping vacation. When they arrive at Bright Stars Camp, they immediately forge new friendships. They engage in activities like archery, swimming, sunning on the beach, and racing competitions.

Alas, the time moves swiftly. How will they continue the bonds formed here over until seeing each other again next year.  Each of the arctic friends attempts to send gifts to their new friends, but none arrive safely. Finally, they discover the perfect gift. Can you guess what it is?

This charming rhyming, animal picture book contains illustrations that are delightful to look at and fun to read. I would suggest it as a bedtime story or group read aloud for preschool and primary grade children.

WORKING SIDE BY SIDE

Mrs. Wiggles and the Numbers: Counting Book for Children, Math Read Aloud Picture Book

Written and illustrated by Lisa Konkol

Poor Mrs. Wiggles has lost her students. She stands alone in her one room school.

One day the numbers fall off the shelf and come to life. As they introduce themselves, the number zero finds himself without a role. The other numbers welcome him and teach young readers that each of us is important. Children learn to count with single numbers and groups of ten. Finally, they receive a bonus page on which numbers are matched to the corresponding number of objects.

This interactive book contains funny illustrations and appealing faces to entice the youngest readers. Recommended as a read aloud for toddlers, preschoolers, and reluctant readers to be enjoyed over and over.

OUR MYSTERIOUS MOON

Mommy, Mommy, Where Is the Moon

Written by Serene Chia

Illustrated by Sinem Kilic Rabito

A charming picture book for preschool and primary grade children that stimulates the imagination and shares basic scientific information about the moon. This book also encourages parents to use everyday conversation as an opportunity to mentor and expand young minds.

The illustrations are simple but colorful and expressive. I appreciated the extension activities at the end of the tale. Different exercises allow the young reader to expand vocabulary and reading comprehension skills, while employing visual and spatial discrimination skills.

Highly recommended to parents, teachers, and librarians who work with children in the three to seven age range.

SMELLY BUT TASTY

Famous Seaweed Soup

Written by Antoinette Truglio Martin

Illustrated by Meri Andreasyan

What young children don’t enjoy a day at the beach? Sara loves dipping her toes in the water, collecting shells, and finding treasures on the beach, but she has an unusual activity as well. Her favorite hobby at the beach is collecting seaweed and snails. Why? She has a recipe for seaweed soup.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:

JAMBALAYA WORDSPEAK

Goobletygok

Written and illustrated by Richard Bird

What a fun picture book! If you know a young reader who is interested in tongue twisters, this is the book for you.

Freddy sits on the couch with his grandfather, affectionately called Poppy. Poppy demonstrates an exceptional ability to develop nonsense words and syllables to delight his young grandson. Freddy and Poppy soon involve themselves in one hysterical scenario after another.

This book challenges the reader, whether that be a beginning reader or the adult who attempts to pronounce the language twists and turns. It will not be long before the reader or listener breaks out in uncontrollable laughter

A word of caution. I would not suggest reading this book right before bedtime because the effects will take a while to wear off. This book could be a fun read at children’s parties, or a family read aloud.

Recommended especially for four to eight-year-old readers but a fun read for anyone who is a child at heart.
