EXCITING NEWS!

Tomorrow’s Trailblazer: A Story of Change and Growth (Trailblazers)

Written by Carolyn Watkins

Illustrated by Remesh Ram

Charlotte is intrigued when she finds her mom reading so many books! Her mother explains that she is returning to school to become a veterinarian.

At first, Charlotte worries, but her mother assures her that she will still be a “mom.” Change can be a good thing as our brain continues to expand and grow. Charlotte is excited to share her news with classmates.

Mother and child learn that it is okay to be unsure when trying out new things, but the reward is well worth the effort. This expressive, multicultural picture book encourages preschool and elementary readers to push the boundaries and explore new passions. Recommended especially for ages three through six.

YOU ARE THERE

Santa Claus and YOU!: A Heartwarming Christmas Rhyming Book For Children (Mark Watson Children’s Books)

Written by Mark Watson

A modern version rhyming picture book of Santa’s Christmas eve journey.

Watson has captured the charm of the night before Christmas and combined it with modern elements like GPS and elves on jet packs assisting Santa with his deliveries.

The author uses second person to transform the story into an interactive, personal experience. The little boy who narrates brings the reader into the story as an adventurous time traveler. Illustrations are colorful and expressive; rhymes are crisp and fun to read aloud.

Recommended as a holiday treat for children ages four through eight.

KIDS IN CONTROL: TRAINING THE BRAIN

How to Train Your Amygdala
Written by Anna Housley Juster
Illustrated by Cynthia Cliff

Most kids have never heard of the Amygdala, but it plays a vital role in keeping them safe. The author uses creative imagery to explain in simple language how it works. Sometimes worrying about what might happen can make the Amygdala work overtime so it is important to train it not to set off false alarms.

Juster provides children with strategies and techniques to relax and remain calm. Examples include deep breathing, relaxing, and connecting with favorite people. The interactive part of this book provides step by step directions for children and an accompanying guide for adults working with children.

Kudos to the author for writing this guide in simple, easily understandable language with large text and appealing illustrations. Recommended for children from preschool through primary grades and the caretakers who love and support them.

CLEVER AND FUNNY

Hamsters Invented Everything

Adisan Books

This colorful picture book is a quick, funny read as a bedtime story or classroom read aloud.

My children had hamsters as pets. We enjoyed watching their clever antics. In this story, readers learn that hamsters invented virtually everything useful that humans employ today. The foxes are the enemy who have tried to prevent hamsters from helping humans. They want to deny giving the foxes credit. When the humans decide to team up with the hamsters, the tables are turned.

Lots of humor, beautiful illustrations and entertainment for primary grade readers.

BILINGUAL WEATHER REPORT

Around the World: Bilingual Weather Wonders

Written and Illustrated by Anna Blankenship

This picture book presents a bilingual overview of weather and seasons in Spanish and English for young readers. The publisher targets the audience as preschoolers but there are parts of the book that contain a lot of text on one page that might be difficult for a child that young to digest.

There are several things that I like about the book. On the pages where English and Spanish are placed side by side, it is easy to translate from one language to the other. Many pages contain pictures to explain the text within the sentence. Illustrations are AI generated but they do correlate well with the text. The author covers different types of weather common in various parts of the world. There is an interactive component which encourages readers to search and find for certain images which keeps the child engaged in the story.

I do believe the book is a valuable tool for bilingual Spanish/English children and especially for ESL students. However, I feel it most effective for children in elementary grades.

Dinosaurs Make New Friends

The Day I Had A Dinosaur

Written by Ashley Wall

Illustrated by Vaughn Duck

A fun picture book to delight young dinosaur fans.

Luke is playing in his backyard when dinosaurs suddenly appear. He and his friends spend the day playing with several different types of dinosaurs giving young readers a lesson about them. The children go to the playground, play catch, play hide and seek, and share dinner with their new friends.

The children encounter some difficulties playing with their unique new friends. They must learn teamwork and cooperation to accommodate their dinosaur friends’ needs. The book teaches these lessons as well as empathy and the value of friendship.

Preschoolers may find the book a bit difficult but the illustrations fill in the gaps. Probably better suited to kindergarten and primary grades.

A MATTER OF PROPORTIONS

Elle Partelle Gets Ready for School

Written by Lieve de Lint

An interesting picture book that explains how to use self-talk to respond to the flood of emotions a child experiences everyday.

A little girl named Elle wakes up on a Monday and prepares to get ready for school. Her mind races with a bunch of different scenarios as she tries to sort things out.

The colorful illustrations assist in identifying each situation.

While the book is targeted for ages three through five, I believe it might be more beneficial for children a bit older.
